Precision engineering sometimes calls for precision drilling of holes. The Electrical Discharge Machining or EDM is an ideal machine for this purpose. Professional companies such as Precision Products Inc (PPI) undertake considerable work for industries dealing with jet turbine fuel systems and aerospace. These are the two industries where the EDM hole popper or EDM drill is used most effectively.

EDM is one of the most accurate processes for creating simple or complex shapes and geometries within parts and assemblies. One of the major functions of the machine is as an EDM drill. In this role, the EDM uses a brass or copper tube as the electrode. The electrode diameter ranges from 0.004 to 0.250 inch and this is used to blast holes through the work piece. The EDM drill also has the ability to drill holes through heat treated materials and carbide.

The single crystal alloys used in turbine blades are very hard and make conventional machining of fine holes in the leading and trailing edges almost impossible. PPI has three Charmilles wire EDM machines and one EDM current drilling machine. The EDMs give PPI the ability to hold tolerances of 80 millionths of an inch.
