High Precision Machining and Drilling with 4th axis EDM

In order to meet the precise requirements of its customers in different sectors, a leading precision engineering company such as Precision Products Inc (PPI) needs special resources. These resources include not only the latest CNC machines for milling and turning operations but also sophisticated precision machines such as the 4th axis EDM or Electrical Discharge Machining. In the case of the EDM hole popper, drilling extremely fine holes in metal samples is one of the major tasks of the machine.

The EDM is one of the most accurate manufacturing processes available for the creation of both simple & complex shapes and geometries within parts and assemblies. EDM works by eroding material in the path of electrical discharges that form an arc between the electrode tool and the work piece. In the EDM hole popper, the electrode is a brass or copper tube with which holes are blasted through the work piece.

Small hole EDM (EDM hole popper) is used to drill rows of holes into the leading and trailing edges of turbine blades so that high temperature alloys can be used to withstand higher temperatures resulting from improved performance engines. These EDMs are also used to create microscopic orifices for fuel system components and spinnerets for synthetic fibers such as rayon. The 4th Axis EDM, on the other hand is used to create smooth and straight drills resulting in both superior finish and perfect surface. PPI has 4th axis EDM capabilities on all its machines, thereby offering an additional range in machining ability.
